Amazon Prime Day is fast approaching, and I hope your tree is ready and your plans are all in order for Amazon Prime season (I might be confusing the holidays). Either way, the annual shopping fest is upon us and here’s a quick explanation, plus some handy tools I’ve compiled to help you land some serious business this year.
First, Amazon Prime Day doesn’t actually last for just one day — it actually takes place from July 11-12 to give you plenty of time to shop for the perfect deal. Secondly, you must have an Amazon Prime membership, and the good news is that if you have the option to start a free trial, you can do so during this time.
So let’s move on to the tools to help you make the most of the Amazon festivities. Be sure to check out our roundup of the best Prime Day deals too, to help you get the best prices.
1. Honey
This is a pretty popular browser extension even when it’s not prime time and I would recommend it anytime because it works with over 3,000 online retailers including Amazon. The Honey extension is available on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera (via the Chrome extension) and Edge, as well as for tablets and mobile devices.
It scans the web for coupon codes related to whatever website you’re shopping on and then automatically applies them. It also tracks price history for items and can let you know about price drops with alerts (so if the price of something you’ve got your eye on drops on Amazon Prime Day, you’ll know about it!).
As for Amazon, it has some pretty useful features: First – Amazon Price Comparison, which scans the internet for the exact product you are looking for and checks if you have the best price or if you can find a better price elsewhere, as well as taking into account possible Amazon benefits and shipping delays.
Another cool feature of Honey is that you can create a “dropdown list,” which is similar to an Amazon wish list, where you can have it keep tabs on the products you want to buy for a specific amount of time. You can also tell it to notify you when a price drops by a certain percentage. If you often shop online, Honey is a must.
2. The Amazon app
You can download the Amazon app to your tablet or smartphone (for Android and iOS) and this will give you access to some pretty useful features such as “sneak peeks” of upcoming offers. You can also sign up for alerts and watch specific offers, as well as get notified when they go live.
You can also preview Lightning Deals, which are limited in time and quantity, before they go live. These aren’t exclusive to Prime Day, but are just another perk of the app. Overall, the app is also an easy way to quickly add items to your cart or save them for later when comparing prices. If you want to be really prepared and there are some things you absolutely want to buy, you can load your cart in advance and it will be ready for checkout.
3. CamelCamelCamel
This is a website that exists specifically to track the prices of millions of products sold on Amazon.
You can sign up for an account on the CamelCamelCamel website, generate a watch list for specific products, import your Amazon Wish List to CamelCamelCamel, enable email alerts for when prices drop, and view product price history. The website can also show price drops by category and an actual price drop percentage.
That’s not all: CamelCamelCamel offers a browser extension, The Camelizer, for more convenient browsing of price trends while browsing products without ever leaving Amazon.
4. Keepa
Similar to CamelCamelCamel, Keepa is a price tracking oriented tool. It provides price tracking and comparison for millions of Amazon products, the option to be notified of price drops on the products you want, and the ability to import Amazon wish lists.
One big difference from CamelCamelCamel is that you don’t need to create an account to do any of these things – just install the browser extension.
Consumer Reports (CR) is an American non-profit consumer organization that seeks to independently test products and conduct journalism and investigative research, as well as public education and consumer advocacy.
CR will be posting the best Amazon deals on its top-rated and tested products to help you find the best value, even on Prime Day, on its CR Deals page.
6. Amazon invite-only offers
This is a new feature that Amazon is introducing this year for Amazon Prime members for deals on items it expects to sell out quickly. These are specific to certain products and you can sign up to be invited to offers by clicking ‘Request Invite’ in the top right corner of the product page. There is a lottery element to this and you will need to check if you are shortlisted, about which you will be notified by Amazon via email.
Remember to check for offers outside of Amazon on retailer websites like Walmart, Best Buy, and Target. Walmart and Target, for example, are making similar sales during the same kind of time period (funny how that works, huh?).
They often operate their own price matching schemes and it may be worth taking the time to compare and ask if they will match a lower price found elsewhere. And with that, I wish you a happy Amazon Prime Day.
